The Society was formed in 1822 and soon afterwards founded the Yorkshire Museum and Botanical Gardens which were put into Trusteeship in 1961. From its earliest days the Society sought to promote the study of the natural sciences and antiquities. Today the YPS is a charitable organisation dedicated to fostering public interest and study in all branches of the natural sciences, archaeology and history. It is an affiliated society of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Activities provided by the Society for members and the public include:
Forthcoming lectures and activitiesThe Society's 2008-9 lecture series includes a number of lectures celebrating the 150th anniversary of Darwin's "On The Origin Of Species". Lectures are held at roughly fortnightly intervals on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm and occasionally Saturday afternoons at 2.30pm from October to May. Admission to lectures is free. Donations are invited from non-members. Unless otherwise stated all lectures are held in the Tempest Anderson Hall, Museum Gardens, York. Young and old are welcome to share our interests and to participate in the educational and social activities. Annual subscriptions are £17 per person or £25 per couple, with concessionary rates available for senior citizens and students. Further details are available from the Society's office.
