About the Society

The Society was formed in 1822 and soon afterwards founded the Yorkshire Museum and Botanical Gardens which were put into Trusteeship in 1961. From its earliest days the Society sought to promote the study of the natural sciences and antiquities. Today the YPS is a charitable organisation with an interest in all branches of the natural sciences as well as archaeology and history. It is now an affiliated society of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

Activities provided by the Society for members and the public include:

  • A varied programme of lectures from October to May on history, archaeology, geography, technology, conservation, natural history and other sciences
  • An annual report which includes in-depth articles on subjects of interest to the Society
  • Education activities for primary and secondary schools
  • Financial support for the publication of books on Yorkshire history, archaeology and natural history
  • Prizes given to school pupils and university students
  • Social events and excursions

The Role of the Society as a Sponsor

Since its inception the Society has been a sponsor of collections of artifacts, articles and books of scientific and historical interest. Most of the material collected between 1822 and 1961 is currently in the Yorkshire Museum although some items and books were sold earlier this century to finance the running of the Museum. More recently the Society has given financial support for:

  • The purchase of items by the Yorkshire Museum such as wildlife specimens, the Middleham Jewel and a collection of northern counties geological specimens.
  • The publication of books and databases including:
    • Roman Jet published by the Yorkshire Museum
    • Humour, Heartache and Hope: Life in Walmgate by Van Wilson
    • York Women's and Craftsmen's Wills compiled by a continuing education group
    • Topographical Views of York Parish Churches published by York Archaeological Trust
    • A History of Clifton Hospital written by Dr M. Haslam
    • Moorland Monuments published by the Council for British Archaeology
    • Sir George Cayley. The Father of Aeronautics by L.S. Rivett
    • This Garden of Death by Hugh Murray
    • Audubon Birds Greeting Cards
    • The Yorkshire Museum leaflet on the Geological Trial in the Museum Gardens

Additionally the Society gives essay prizes to archaeology students and sixth form pupils.
