No image has been formally decided upon to date. However, one of the proposals is the image above which shows the fluid flow around an aerofoil. This has been chosen to represent the connection of York and YPS with Sir George Cayley, one of the world's pioneers of aviation.
A prolific Yorkshire scientific innovator, Sir George Cayley was the first to recognise the interrelationship of lift, thrust, gravity and drag in aeroplane development - and to turn it into manned flight in 1851. He was a founder member of both the Yorkshire Philosophical Society in 1822 and of the British Association for Science in 1831 within these Museum Gardens.
We are currently compliling a collection of short biographical articles about other Yorkshire scientists and innovators and their acheivements. Please go to the Yorkshire Science and Innovation page for further details. |
In Spring 2012, York will be hosting a "Science and Innovation Grand Tour". This will consist of the exhibition of many art images posted around York city centre. Each image will have some connection with science and innovation in York. The Yorkshire Philosophical Society will be sponsoring one of the images in the exhibition. Further details will follow. |
