It was the Yorkshire Philosophical Society that originally purchased the land, and created the The Museum Gardens 180 years ago back in 1830.
The recent appointment in 2008 of a new head gardener, Sjaak Kastelijn, The Yorkshire Museums Trust (now the owner of The Museum Gardens) has set in train a new period of development for the gardens, and the fruits of this new era can already be seen on a walk through the gardens – unwanted stock has been removed, new vistas have been opened up and new plant areas created.

A small group of YPS members now meet occasionally in the Lodge – usually with the new head gardener present – to hear about latest developments, and to look for ways in which the YPS might be able to contribute to the ongoing development of the Gardens .We recently sponsored the new Fern Garden by the Multiangular Tower.
